High School Students Can Earn College Credit at SCC
Best Start
The
Best Start Program is a dual credit program at SCC that allows high school students earn both high school and college credit at the same time. Best Start students are taught by SCC faculty at various locations. Students must:
- Be at least 16 years of age and have completed their sophomore year in high school.
- Meet minimum score on placement tests for SCC curriculum courses, or SAT/ACT scores must meet minimum college requirement.
- Submit an application for Best Start with permission signatures.
Technical Advanced Placement
TAP is designed to assist high school students into making a smooth transition from high school to college. Qualified students can earn TAP credit at SCC for skills mastered in similar high school occupational courses. Eligible programs of study include:
- Automotive Technology
- Computer Technology
- Culinary Arts
- HVAC-R
- Horticulture

High School Dropout Prevention and Recovery Program
SCC, in collaboration with Spartanburg County School Districts 1-7, offers a program for youth (16-20 years old) who have dropped out or are at risk of dropping out of high school:
Gateway to College. This program enable students to earn a high school diploma, awarded by a participating area high school, while achieving college success. Students earn both high school and college credit, up to and including an associate degree, diploma or certificate, awarded by SCC. All courses are college courses taught by college faculty on the central campus or Tyger River Campus. Students also receive comprehensive and individualized support services, including academic and career advising, to help ensure their success. Gateway to College has eligibility requirements. Students must meet these requirements and live in a participating school district.

Help High School Students Improve Grades for College
Pre-College Institute is a program designed for high school students who need a little help making better grades in reading, math or English so they can attend college.
With flexible options such as weekend classes and courses taught by SCC-approved instructors, Pre-College Institute is an ideal program for many high school students. There is no charge for these classes.
To be eligible for Pre-College Institute, students must:
- Be at least 16 years of age and completed sophomore year of high school.
- Have NOT met minimum score on either the ASSET/COMPASS for curriculum courses at SCC or SAT/ACT scores for minimum college requirements.
- Meet the minimum score on the ASSET/COMPASS for transitional (100 level) courses.
