Advising: Frequently Asked Questions

What is the Academic Advising Center?

The Academic Advising Center is where SCC students visit to confer on course selection, registration and other important information concerning their program of study.

What group of students does the Academic Advising Center advise?

Academic advisors will advise any student who tests into at least one 031-032 zero-level course, first time associate of arts and associate of science students, first time or re-entry into any health science program while waiting acceptance, and radiation protection students.

The radiation protection students are advised in the Advising Center until they graduate from the program.

Why do I need to see an advisor for registration?
Your advisor will help you clarify your educational goals, discuss program requirements, course pre-requisites, graduation requirements, academic progress, and transfer information.

What is an admissions status report?

The admissions status report is a report that was given to you by an SCC admissions counselor at the time you took the placement test. Your test results indicate proper course placement and prerequisite requirements for your program of study.

Do I have to attend school during the summer?

No, you do not have to attend during the summer semester. However, many programs at Spartanburg Community College are designed for students to attend during the summer semester. Some classes are only offered during the summer semester, which means not attending in the summer may delay your graduation.

How many credits hours do I need to attend in order to be a full-time student?

You must attend at least 12 credit hours to be considered a full-time student.

Is full-time status necessary?

It is not necessary to attend SCC full time (at least 12 credit hours), but by attending college full-time you will earn your degree in a timely manner. We understand if you are unable to attend full-time, but we encourage students to do so if possible. Some financial aid programs or health insurance companies require a student to maintain full-time status.

Where do I go to change my program?

You should go to the admissions center located in the Dan L. Terhune Student Services building on the Central Campus (Spartanburg) to change your program.

Where do I go to change my address, name or phone number?

You should go to the records office to change your personal information. It is located in the Dan L. Terhune Student Services building on the Central Campus (Spartanburg).

How do I withdraw from the college?
If you find it necessary to withdraw from the college, please consult with your academic advisor. You must complete and submit a drop form to the records office for appropriate withdrawal. You will need your teacher’s signature. You should notify the financial aid office if you are receiving financial aid.

E-Mail the Academic Advising Center if you have a question concerning academic advising at advisingcenter@sccsc.edu. Please allow at least two business days for a response.
