Union County Advanced Technology Center
SCC, the city of Union, Union County and the University of South Carolina Union have established a $2.5 million high-tech training center - the Union County Advanced Technology Center which houses the QuickJobs Development Center - to prepare the current workforce for the next generation of jobs.
The city and the county committed $440,000 in land and other resources to leverage $1.25 million in Community Development Block Grant funds to build a QuickJobs Development Center and another $1 million from the Economic Development Administration to develop the Robotics Training Center in the same facility, the Union County Advanced Technology Center. State Representative Mike Anthony endorsed the project by supporting a Competitive Community Grant for $350,000, and the Catawba Regional Council of Governments was instrumental in coordinating the funding.
In addition to funds, each partner provided vital support for the project. The city of Union furnished the architectural drawings and the land. Union County agreed to provide operating and maintenance support. USC Union provides course work in general education and SCC provides technical training, furnishings and equipment for the center.
The recently completed 14,000 square-foot facility on Highway 176 will initially house three technical programs: welding, pipe fitting and Manufacturing Skills Standards Council certification. Technical classes began in mid-November 2009.Academic classes for college credit begin in May, 2010.
Spartanburg Community College students residing in Union County qualify for a
lower cost tuition than other out-of-county residents.
Located in the Union County Commerce Industrial Park, the training center provides relevant, accessible and affordable educational programs and services that will advance economic development in both Union County and the region.
