July 4, 2010 - Spartanburg Herald-Journal editorial expresses appreciation of Evans Building use

July 4, 2010 - Spartanburg Herald-Journal - The Spartanburg Community College and Spartanburg County Council equally deserve acknowledgment and appreciation for their decision to open a downtown campus, housed in the most appropriate location, the Evans Building. This beautiful and historic building on Dean Street was constructed originally in 1921 to be the high school for Spartanburg and surrounding communities. Being named for Dr. Frank Evans, superintendent of Spartanburg schools for many years, it was called Evans High School. Later, the name was changed to Spartanburg High School.

Many local residents and students who did not live in this area during those years do not know the history and benefits that have come from this building. We have seen many local buildings torn down, but Spartanburg County is to be thanked for the preservation of the Evans Building. Thousands of students graduated from the Evans Building before the present Spartanburg High School building was built in 1959 on Dupre Drive.

I thank Spartanburg for the continued use of the Evans Building. Through the years it has been home to many needed services. Now with the opening of the SCC campus, it is a tribute to the Evans Building as it returns to its original purpose, education.

I was a SHS graduate in the class of 1938. Speaking for the 293 members of my class, I thank Spartanburg that our alma mater still stands and serves. I hope each student who has the privilege of walking the majestic stairs of the Dean Street entrance will appreciate the honor they have to be a part of history in Spartanburg. Members of my 1938 class still have a group who meet regularly for fellowship, reminiscing and a time of thankfulness for our school, the teachers who helped us reach many goals and a time of prayer to start each day.
